Job Description:
Summary
Magrathea is a technology startup based in Oakland, California with
a mission to radically reduce the socioenvironmental impacts of
producing structural metal from natural resources.
Role Description
--- Leading development, documentation, and implementation of pilot
scale process studies.--- Designing pilot plant scale processes to
prove out key production processes.--- Designing experiments to
test hypotheses and answer key questions.--- Help develop new
process technologies internally and with external collaborators to
protect novel technology through intellectual property.--- Running
elemental analysis of lab samples and ensuring accuracy of the
results.--- Observing best safety practices and contributing to a
positive and proactive safety culture.--- Occasional travel to
off-site locations where the company is developing resource
projects.
Ideal Background
--- Bachelor's, Masters, or PhD in chemistry, chemical engineering,
or similar field.--- Experience designing, constructing, and
operating pilot or commercial scale processes.--- Experience with
inorganic chemistry, gas-phase chemistry, heterogeneous catalysis,
salt chemistry, molten salts, electrochemistry, electrochemical
engineering, chlor-alkali, metallurgy, alloy technology, casting,
or structural metals are all helpful.--- Understanding and
experience in basic analytical chemistry such as calibrations, the
use of analytical instruments like ICP-OES machines, and other
inorganic analytical techniques.--- Creative and open-minded with
the ability to rapidly learn about and think through complicated
problems generating hypotheses for their resolution.--- Ability to
work on a team to achieve audacious goals together.--- History of
promoting company culture based on respect, care for the success of
team members, and zeal for innovation with a demonstrated passion
for solving climate change.
Physical Requirements
The physical demands described here are representative of those

and/or humid conditions, with toxic or caustic chemicals and
moderate heat. Magrathea makes employee safety a top priority and
proper engineering controls with excessive redundancy will be put

reduced to acceptable occupational levels through the distribution
and usage of personal protective equipment. From time to time it
may be necessary to lift objects weighing up to 20 kilograms.
