Faculty Director of Arts Research and Discovery The Arts Initiative in partnership with the Office of the Vice President for Research ( OVPR ) seeks a Faculty Director of Arts Research and Discovery to lead the expansion and integration of Arts Research at the University of Michigan. This role will lead strategy, design funding programs, and develop infrastructure for arts research and creative practice across U-M in alignment with the goals of the Arts Initiative. This new position will complement the Research Associate Deans and others faculty and staff in amplifying and elevating arts-centered and arts integrative research. Ideal candidates will bring an expertise in the arts, catalyze arts research, and can push the boundaries of what research is by articulating a strong vision for arts research. This position is a 3-year appointment with opportunity for extension. Responsibilities*

• Manage a budget of up to $500,000 annually to develop, design, and lead funding programs focused on integrative arts research that supports the sector, strengthens the student experience, and leads to new discoveries. Promote arts research to strengthen the case for the value of the arts within the context of a leading research university.
• Advise and meet with grant recipients to foster success of the projects.
• Develop strategies for supporting Arts Research across campus and work with colleagues to amplify arts-centered and arts-integrative research, including but not limited to, the Research Associate Deans, a2ru, ArtsEngine, the Arts Initiative, and OVPR.
• Work across disciplines to further develop understanding of what is possible within Arts Research and develop new pathways for partnerships and collaboration.
• Work with Arts Integration Action Teams to support faculty in finding arts partners for interdisciplinary teaching, research, scholarship, and creative practice and including the arts in research grant proposals.
• Identify the needs and gaps within Arts Research and implement strategies to address them.
• Present on findings and recommendations to further disseminate discoveries, impact, and build community around Arts Research at U-M and in higher education. Provide a vision and voice for artistic research as U-M becomes a leader in the field.
• Report jointly to Arts Initiative Leadership and the Associate Vice President for Research: Social Sciences, Humanities, and the Arts within OVPR. Required Qualifications* Interested candidates must be existing tenure, practice or clinical track faculty at the University of Michigan with the rank of Associate Professor or higher. The successful candidate will have a background in the arts, teaching, and research in higher education.
  • Experience conducting and supporting research and creative practice in the arts and in arts integration.
  • Ability to manage research funding and funding programs.
  • Interest and ability to advocate for arts research, creative practice and arts integrative research.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with all levels of personnel, exercise tact and diplomacy, and navigate complex situations effectively and confidentially.
  • Ability to multitask, meet deadlines, and problem solve creatively.
  • Ability to work as a team player is able to convene necessary parties to accomplish scope of the role. Additional Information We anticipate a 50% administrative appointment commencing July 1 2023 through June 30, 2026. The possibility of renewal of the 3-year term will be considered.
