As a core value of the institution, we frame our work in restorative practices, focusing on community engagement and creating inclusive environments where we acknowledge harm and work to repair it within the community. Job Summary The Assistant Director, Diversity and Inclusion will help us create socially just communities in the residence halls and apartments by leading a comprehensive multicultural lounge program that serves approximately 12,000 residents in both the undergraduate and graduate communities. Born out of the Black Action Movement in the early 1970's the multicultural lounges are 16 unique spaces that serve as both programming and community space and core educational spaces for residents and the campus community. Each multicultural lounge has its own stakeholders, needs, and unique educational contributions to the overall residential experience. In direction and leadership over the multicultural lounge program you will build strong relationships with campus partners, faculty, alumni, and legacy groups and have oversight and management of all multicultural lounge initiatives. Responsibilities* Multicultural Lounge Strategic Collaborations (40%) Partnership Development Oversee cultivation and maintenance of new strategic partnerships with campus units, faculty, alumni, residents, and student organizations. Create partnerships that enhance student learning, intercultural education, and inclusive spaces for the campus community. Work closely with alumni to build investment, engagement, and potential donors for the multicultural lounge programs. Create curriculum for each multicultural lounge honoring the namesake of each multicultural lounge, including ongoing educational components related to significant dates, events, or campaigns. In partnership with faculty, deliver curriculum to classes within the University of Michigan that meet the class and multicultural lounge. Develop trainings based on the mission and vision of multicultural lounges to be delivered to the campus community. Develop learning outcomes for the multicultural lounge program, for assessment purposes. Multicultural Lounges Management and Capital Projects Work (35%) Direct and administer all operations, systems, programs, services and resources to advance the mission of all 16 multicultural lounges for the campus community Lead the entire M Housing Design Process for renovations of multicultural lounges scheduled for each year, directing the process includes: Running multiple stages of the design process with the campus community including feedback sessions and design showcases Assisting with design elements with the designer in Student Life capital projects Creating and implementing graphic and art design components for the multicultural lounges that are aligned with the purpose of the individual space and campus community needs Direct work with multiple SL and campus stakeholders to ensure that we are adhering to the mission of the multicultural lounge program while aligning needs and the renovation work for the division. Create design elements that both honor the history of student activism and the multicultural lounges, while creating a space of education and storytelling for the current student. Supervision, including directing the work and goals of the program manager (FTE) and 2 student positions, including training and performance management. Manage departmental budgets related to multicultural lounge renovations, improvements, and design fixes. Help deliver other programmatic components by participating in and leading related committees and other special projects to meet overall DEI strategic goals. Serve in on-call rotation to manage campus climate incidents within the residence halls, remotely by phone. Help us with managing campus climate crisis intervention, conflict resolution, and providing resource and referral services to students of all identities utilizing a culturally competent framework. Leads in the development of the program manager level team (5 FTE) in facilitation, curriculum development, and residential climate support. Other Duties as Assigned by Michigan Housing Required Qualifications*

  • Master's degree in a related field ( Higher Education, Sociology, Psychology, Social Work)
  • At least three years post-masters experience with diversity, equity, and inclusion work in a higher education setting
  • At least two years experience facilitating topics of diversity, equity, inclusion, and social justice, diversity
  • Experience with digital platforms and storytelling through visual print
  • Previous experience in supervision Desired Qualifications*
    • Familiarity with renovation, design, or capital project work in a residential setting
    • Familiarity with Restorative practice principles
    • Student affairs experience with emphasis on managing multicultural spaces
    • Experience working with faculty to create course content or curriculum
    • Experience working or living in on-campus housing or community settings as a permanent staff member Additional Information Financial/Budgetary Responsibility Co-management of renovation project funds - approximately from 200K - 1 million a year. Working conditions Job requires working evening and weekend hours and traveling to multiple M Housing locations on campus. Position is an onsite position and shares office coverage responsibilities. Possibility for one (1) day remote work a week. Physical requirements Be able to move and transport packages and boxes up to 25 lbs Direct reports This position directly supervises a program manager (permanent staff) position and 2 interns/research assistants. Upline includes approximately 18-24 multicultural lounge community assistants. This role may have reporting obligations under Title IX and Clery.
