Responsibilities* Duties will include but are not limited to: Perform initial assessments of patients admitted to the hospital, triage patients appropriately for the Medicine Pulmonary service. Perform detailed history and physical, formulate initial assessment and plan, and present patient cases and any pertinent data to medical staff. Appropriately order, collect, and interpret reports from diagnostic lab testing, radiographic procedures, and other clinical studies; prescribe medications and enter other orders related to patient care; perform various diagnostic, therapeutic, and minor surgical procedures including but not limited to thoracentesis, paracentesis, arterial blood gases; assist attending physicians in orientation of new medical trainees such as resident physicians or medical students to the service; assist in the training of new advanced practice providers to the service; assist in maintaining continuity of care throughout the hospital stay. Communicate appropriately with attending physicians, consultants, and other members of the patient care team in order to coordinate and provide clinical care. Maintain accurate and thorough documentation regarding patient status, evaluations, and treatments. Streamline the patient transfer process between levels of care, including writing discharge orders and summaries and communicating specific patient needs to internal and external care centers or team members, as well as ambulatory care providers as needed. Participate in quality assurance activities including quality improvement projects, such as Lean Projects and clinical safety initiatives; assist in the development of patient-specific, facility-based disease management protocols; perform other related duties as required to assure patient safety and satisfaction; and utilize new improvements and/or technologies that relate to job assignments. Nursing Specific Info Employment is contingent upon successful completion of the credentialing and privileging process. Required Qualifications* NP: Current licensure to practice as a Registered Nurse and Nurse Practitioner specialty certification in the State of Michigan. Current specialty certification to practice as an Adult-Gerontology Acute Care Nurse Practitioner. Graduate of an accredited Nurse Practitioner program. Certification as a Nurse Practitioner recognized by the National Council of State Boards of Nursing (NCSBN). PA: Current license to practice as a Physician Assistant in the State of Michigan. Satisfactory completion of a Physician Assistant program accredited by Accreditation Review Commission on Education for the Physician Assistant (ARC-PA) or one of its predecessor agencies, CAHEA or CAAHEP. Certification by the National Commission on Certification for Physician Assistants (NCCPA). NP/PA: DEA required, or ability to obtain a DEA within 30 days of start date required. BLS/ACLS required. NOTE: Employment is contingent upon successful completion of the credentialing and privileging process. Desired Qualifications* NP: Given the acuity and multiple comorbidities of the patients encountered on the Medicine Pulmonary service, 5+ years of ICU/inpatient experience is strongly preferred. Experience considered will include practice as a nurse practitioner or a bedside nurse. Prior experience either as a nurse practitioner in a medical or cardiac ICU is preferred, but not required. PA: Given the acuity and multiple comorbidities of the patient encountered on the Medicine Pulmonary service, 5+ years of ICU/inpatient experience is strongly preferred. Prior experience as a physician assistant in a medical or cardiac ICU is preferred, but not required. NP/PA: Any additional experience rounding on an inpatient internal medicine, hospitalist or critical care service caring for acutely ill patients will be considered. Clinical experience within a tertiary referral hospital with high acuity patients is preferred. Experience caring for patient populations with lung disease or respiratory failure, multisystem involvement of internal medicine co-morbidities, familiarity with immunosuppression medications including common side effects and drug interactions will be considered. Familiarity managing patients on mechanical ventilation and problem solving issues related to respiratory failure. Experience in thoracentesis, paracentesis, chest tubes and drains, and arterial blood gases considered. Demonstrated clinical leadership and experience with coordinating and managing complex and multifaceted projects. Demonstrated expertise in facilitating the educational growth of others through previous clinical instructional roles. Evidence of superb scholastic performance will be considered. ?Demonstrate ability to complete history and physical examinations; order appropriate diagnostic studies; synthesize information and make informed clinical decisions; develop appropriate care plans; and be responsive to patient and family preferences as required. Demonstrate strong interpersonal skills, verbal and written communication skills, and an adherence to ethical principles and sensitivity to diversity. Demonstrate organizational skills and problem solving skills to be able to work in a multifaceted environment. Demonstrate computer skills including electronic medical record navigation, documentation, and order entry. The provider must demonstrate a high level of critical thinking and medical knowledge by using current medical information and scientific evidence for patient care. Ability to prioritize assignments and manage a busy work environment. Demonstrate ability to navigate multiple patient care environments in order to obtain clinical information required for patient care, or assist in the delivery of clinical care. Demonstrate a commitment to carrying out professional responsibilities. Ability to work night shifts, days shifts, or weekend shifts to cover a 24/7 inpatient service. Work Schedule Shift/Hours/Days: Part-time, 20hrs/week average. Shift: Weekend Nights with possibility of occasional day shifts as scheduling requires or permits.
