This is a two-year appointment with the possibility ofextension for a third year.The Michigan Innocence Clinic works to exonerate defendants who have been wrongfully convicted instate or federal court in Michigan. The Clinic primarily workson cases where there is no DNA to test, and so the work ofthe Clinic largely involves finding new witnesses, searchingfor suppressed evidence, and challenging discredited oroutdated forensic science. The Clinic opened in 2009 andhas so far freed 25 men and 4 women who had collectivelyserved over 300 years in prison for crimes they did notcommit. Responsibilities* The Clinical Fellows Program is designed to allow attorneysto explore the possibility of a career in clinical teaching andfully support them in that endeavor. Michigan ClinicalFellows gain valuable experience and mentoring in clinicalpedagogy and in their substantive area of practice. Theirduties include clinical teaching and student supervision in conjunction with clinic directors, and participation in theoperation and development of the clinic in which they teach.Support is provided for professional development andscholarship. Required Qualifications* The successful applicant will have a strong interest in clinical teaching, experience in appellate advocacy and legal writing, a demonstrated commitment to public interest lawyering, and potential for scholarship and success as a clinical teacher. Candidates must hold a JD degree and be eligible for licensure in Michigan. Desired Qualifications* Experience with criminal litigation and/or innocence work isstrongly preferred.
