Michigan Medicine is seeking a Section Head of Plastic and
Reconstructive Surgery who will be responsible for oversight of all
clinical, research, administrative, and educational domains within
the Section. They will lead all strategic visioning, programmatic
growth, and new initiatives while maintaining a strong financial
performance. The Section Head will be responsible for all faculty
recruitment, mentorship, development, and retention. Most
importantly, the preferred candidate will be fully committed to
fostering a culture that supports diversity and inclusion. The
preferred candidate will demonstrate a proven track record of
success in all of these domains.
The University of Michigan Section of Plastic Surgery is part of a
statewide network which includes the University of Michigan
Hospitals, Ann Arbor Veterans Administration Hospital, MyMichigan
Health (Midland, Michigan), Sparrow Hospital (Lansing, Michigan),
Chelsea Community Hospital (Chelsea, Michigan), and Michigan West
(Grand Rapids, Michigan). At the University of Michigan Hospitals
in Ann Arbor, we have 22 full-time clinical faculty members and 2
Clinical Adjunct Faculty members. We have a large clinical volume
with over 30,000 clinic visits and 4,000 major operations per year.
The scope of our clinical practice encompasses the full breadth of
plastic and reconstructive surgery including hand surgery,
craniofacial surgery, pediatric plastic surgery, aesthetic surgery,
body contouring, breast reconstruction, general plastic surgery,
gender affirming surgery, microvascular reconstruction, peripheral
nerve, lymphedema, limb reconstruction, and osseous
integration.
The University of Michigan Section of Plastic Surgery is actively
involved in the education of medical students, residents, and
fellows. Plastic Surgery has 7-year integrated residency program
with 28 approved positions. We have 2 ACGME accredited hand
fellows, 1 ACGME accredited craniofacial fellow, 1 fellow in gender
affirmation surgery, and 1 fellow in microsurgery.
The faculty in the Section of Plastic Surgery hold 8 Endowed
Professorships and have extensively served in leadership roles
locally and nationally. Currently, our faculty hold many
significant leadership roles in organized plastic surgery helping
to guide the specialty forward.
Plastic Surgery has a diverse and robust clinical and basic science
research portfolio with notable strengths in health services,
educational, and translational research. Eight faculty members in
plastic surgery have extramural funding to support their individual
research efforts. Over the past 10 years, the Section of Plastic
Surgery's annual research spending has exceeded $4,000,000/year and
over the past 3 years, has exceeded $5,000,000/year. Plastic
Surgery faculty collaborate closely with faculty colleagues in the
Center for Healthcare Outcomes and Policy, the Center for Global
Surgery, the Center for Surgical Innovation, the College of
Engineering, and numerous departments across the university.
Candidates should have an M.D. and be Board Certified in Plastic
Surgery. They should hold or have the ability to obtain the
appropriate medical licenses in the State of Michigan.
Excellent leadership and communication skills are essential.
Evidence of clinical competence and competence in clinical and
