Appointment period: August 20, 2021 - April 30, 2022. This appointment is renewable, pending evaluation by the home departments.

Duties: 50% Music Theory

  • Teaching
  • Teach one graduate review section of Music Theory 239 each fall and winter term.

  • GSI supervision
  • Supervise about eight Graduate Student Instructors per term who teach about 13 aural skills classes (sections of Music Theory 139, 140, 239, and 240). Total enrollment: About 200 students in fall terms, 180 in winter terms.
  • In consultation with the chair of Music Theory and as needed, emend the aural skills curriculum, including in-class and remote instruction. Provide syllabi, grading policies, exams, course content, and overall administrative support to GSIs. Hold weekly meetings with GSIs.
  • Monitor and adjust aural skills enrollments for well-balanced class sizes.
  • Observe GSIs in the classroom and provide feedback on their teaching.
  • Obtain desk copies of textbooks for GSIs teaching aural skills and written skills.

  • Administrative support to the Music Theory department
  • Supervise grading the aural skills portion of the Theory Placement Exam and report results to the department recorder.
  • Advise the Music Theory chair and Associate Dean for Graduate Studies on GSI teaching assignments.
  • Advise the Music Theory department as needed on technology for online instruction and student remediation.

Duties: 50% Conducting

  • Teaching
  • Teach Conducting 510 (Aural Skills for Conductors) in fall and winter terms: a one-hour weekly lesson required of each first-year MM student in Conducting (Band, Choral, and Orchestral). Enrollment: four to ten students per term, taught individually.
  • At the instructor's discretion and as enrollments permit, teach Conducting 510 to students in other programs, including Music Theory PhD students.
  • Continue to offer the existing curriculum, with possible emendations in consultation with the Conducting department, to include fixed-do solfege, transposition by clef, harmonic arpeggiation singing, score reading at the piano, analytical approaches as needed.
  • Write and submit to each student's major conducting professor a skills assessment of each student at the beginning of the fall term, at the end of fall term, and at the end of the winter term.


  • Terminal degree in Music Theory preferred
  • Demonstrated success in the following areas of teaching: college-level classroom aural skills; graduate review courses; one-on-one teaching (lessons)
  • Advanced aural training, including in solfege, transposition by clef, score reading, and analysis
  • Ability to prioritize the development of skills needed by professional conductors
  • Experience with recent instructional technology
  • Strong administrative and supervisory skills appropriate to a complex school of performing arts.
