Job Summary The University of Michigan Injury Prevention Center (UMIPC) is seeking an outstanding statistician to support the data analysis activities of the center, as well as oversee maintenance of the System for Opioid Overdose Surveillance (SOS) web-based dashboard ( ). The UMIPC is one of nine CDC-funded regional injury research control centers that carries out research, training, and outreach missions with the overall goal of preventing injury. One of the core outreach activities of the center is the System for Opioid Overdose Surveillance"a near real-time system for tracking fatal and non-fatal overdoses in the state of Michigan. The successful candidate will a) work as the lead analyst in the Statistics and Methods section of the center and will conduct analyses to further the many UMIPC research studies, and studies directed by the UMIPC investigators both independently and under the supervision of the section head, Dr. Jason Goldstick; and b) perform day-to-day maintenance of the SOS dashboard. The relative proportions of time spent on those two roles will be approximately 75% and 25%, respectively, but will vary depending on UMIPC and SOS needs. Responsibilities* * Perform cleaning and documentation of data generated from studies run by UMIPC investigators; these may include primary data, as well as data from large databases, such as the Optuminsight data base. * Writing programs to clean data and perform statistical analyses in SAS, Stata, R, and/or Python * Formulating and implementing statistical analysis plans tailored to specific project needs * Documentation and presentation of analytic results * Creating data visualizations for data briefs, manuscripts, or presentations * Procuring external data sources needed to supplement studies (e.g., publicly available data from the census, CDC WONDER, ICPSR, or other sources) * Ensuring the fidelity of SOS data through running, and modifying as needed, data checking codes * Working daily to guarantee timely upload of cleaned and checked SOS data to the web server * Ensuring proper SOS dashboard functionality and, as necessary, debugging the dashboard in collaboration with part time web development staff Required Qualifications* Bachelor's degree in Statistics, Public Health (Biostatistics, Epidemiology, Health Services), or related field Highly motivated, organized, autonomous person with excellent multi-tasking ability and record-keeping Must be able to program, manage data, and conduct statistical analyses using statistical software packages such as R, SAS, and/or Stata. Experience using Python (pandas in particular) Demonstrated data management skills and experience preparing data for analysis Solid grounding in statistical theory and application, and willingness to learn and apply new methods and approaches. Possession of excellent communication skills, both written and verbal. Exceptional ability to independently prepare correspondence (especially with e-mail messages) and write/edit/produce reports Professional demeanor and excellent interpersonal skills Ability to work and communicate effectively with a multidisciplinary team Willingness to learn basic web development using Java Desired Qualifications* Master's degree in Statistics, Public Health (Biostatistics, Epidemiology, or Health Services), or a related field Experience with web development using Java Experience with administrative and clinical claims data, such as Optuminsight or other large commercial claims databases, and Medicaid or other large health systems.
