Job Summary

The Center for Midlife Science in the Department of Epidemiology specializes in the study of multifaceted diseases and health conditions, including osteoarthritis, diabetes, osteoporosis, sensory and physical function impairment, particularly their initiation and progression during the midlife. The Center also broadly supports cohort studies focused on other critical life stages and on understudied diseases. The Center houses two 25+ year cohort studies of midlife aging, the Study of Women's Health Across the Nation (SWAN) and the Michigan Bone Health and Metabolism Study (descended from the Tecumseh Community Health Study), a cohort study of Systemic Lupus Erythematosus (MILES), and a cohort study of neurobehavioral development (SEMILLA).

SWAN (Study of Women Across Nation), a 7-site longitudinal cohort study initiated in 1996, recently renewed, will continue with clinical subject visits, data collection and data management.

The Clinical Data Collection and Data Management Core will be responsible for implementing strategies to ensure retention of the study cohort, planning and overseeing the data collection associated with the core visit, including all training and quality control activities, and management of the study data for subsequent analyses and publications.

This position will assist the SWAN Clinic Director with the coordination of clinical subject participation in the SWAN project.

Responsibilities*

Duties include:

  • Participate in the screening, scheduling and consenting of participants paying close attention of eligibility requirements. This may include utilizing MiChart for medical record screening and recruitment purposes only for the purpose of enrolling participants.

  • Complete protocol questionnaires and interviews with study participants by collecting and processing research participant data.

  • Conduct anthropometry measures including height, weight, waist and hip circumference and conduct measures of blood pressure.

  • Conduct assessments of physical function with participants in accordance with standardized protocols.

  • Collect and process specimen samples (blood/urine) and monitor participants.

  • Complete participant charts and support data entry.

  • Assist with clinic administrative activities such as; photocopying of interview packets, mailing of participant packets, set up of clinic rooms and lab for participant visits, assembling collection kits.

The candidate must certify to protocol standards to ensure accuracy in data collection and human subjects engagement such as recruitment techniques and eligibility criteria, conduct of informed consent, administration of questionnaires, physical assessment measures, specimen collection as well as the conduct of research involving human subjects. (PEERRS and Laboratory Safety Trainings once hired).

Required Qualifications*

Individual must be highly sensitive to human subjects and confidential information, detail-oriented, conscientious, and responsible with excellent organizational skills. Ability to communicate effectively with team members about protocol and sample collection needs. High school diploma and/or Associates degree with a minimum of 2 years experience.

Desired Qualifications*

Prior experience in a research setting preferred. Experience in phlebotomy is preferred or willingness to be trained. Bachelor's Degree is also preferred.
