Job Summary

The mission of the Marketing and Communications Team in the Office of University Development is to celebrate and inspire life-changing philanthropic support at the University of Michigan. Our work engages the donors, prospects and volunteers who help make Michigan a world-class university with global reach and limitless potential.

Our team provides strategic marketing and communications guidance, planning, and execution to development colleagues throughout the university. We produce magazines, newsletters, digital content, event materials, and fundraising communications. We are a mix of storytellers, strategists, designers, and digital experts. Our work celebrates and inspires life-changing support from U-M donors.

We are looking for a motivated and detail-oriented writer to join the OUD Marketing and Communications team. We need someone with curiosity and inspiration, talent and passion, who can support and enhance our storytelling efforts. Excellent proofreading and copyediting skills are desirable.

This role will be responsible for elements related to writing long- and short-form feature stories, press releases, brochures and other collateral, and digital content, as well as copyediting and proofreading. Our goal is to engage a variety of donors and prospective audiences through overseeing and creating storytelling, research, writing, editing, case development, copywriting, media relations, and promotion. Channels include, but are not limited to, print, web, email marketing (including e-newsletters), and social media.

The Office of University Development seeks to maximize private support for the University of Michigan.


  • Write compelling, donor-centered content for event promotions, social media, stewardship, fundraising, and storytelling platforms.

  • Review, proofread, and edit copy for style and grammatical correctness

  • Collaborate with colleagues, working closely with production managers, designers, other writers, and OUD/campus partners to develop content

  • Understand the University of Michigan, Leaders & Best, and Victors for Michigan brands and help to support those brands consistently

Required Qualifications*

  • A bachelor's degree in journalism, communications, English, or a related field

  • Minimum of three years of progressively increasing experience in communications or marketing-related positions

  • Experience in writing stories and/or copy for professional outlets

  • Basic familiarity or experience with current corporate, university and non-profit writing styles

  • Excellent judgment regarding standards and ethics

  • Experience working with diverse organizational units as part of day-to-day responsibilities

  • Ability to work in shared, collaborative space; ability to work in a fast-paced environment; ability to independently manage a position that changes from day to day.

  • Outstanding writing skills

  • A high level of professionalism

  • Experience with AP Style or a willingness to learn

  • Ability to set and manage priorities, handle multiple assignments and deadlines
