Public Works Technician - IS

508530 TEMA 18 $21.98/hr

Nature of Work: Incumbent may be responsible for the following duties: Operating light to heavy equipment and tools to maintain and repair streets and pot holes, including plowing, salting, sanding, milling and base preparation, paving, sweeping, grading, and crack sealing; installing, repairing, maintaining, inspecting and removing water distribution and collection system components, including water services and water mains, hydrant meters and backflow preventers, sewer taps and permanent and temporary sewer and water main disconnections; driving and operating solid waste trucks for collection of solid waste.

Related Work: Performing accident and storm damage vegetation clean-up; following the safe and proper use of various hand, power tools and test instruments; following proper safety practices for confined space entry; performing minor equipment and tool maintenance and repair; monitoring utility system flow to ensure that water and sewage systems are functioning properly; locating and staking buried City utilities (MISS DIG).

Required Qualifications:

Must have a valid commercial driver's license (CDL) with a "B" and air brake endorsement

Must be able to follow oral and written instructions

Previous experience in road maintenance, underground utility construction, landscape construction or as a solid waste driver

Reading, interpreting, and following maps, routes, manuals, blueprints and work orders

Hazardous materials precautions and clean-up

Work safety procedures and precautions including, lifting, lock-out/tag-out, confined space, wet floors, and power tool safety

General mechanical practices, procedures, tools and equipment for large and small equipment

Physical Requirements:

The physical ability to drive, walk, stand, stoop, bend, crawl, climb, kneel, crouch, reach, push, pull, lift, grasp and perform repetitive motions. The work requires the ability to operate hand and foot controls on machinery and equipment. Incumbent may be exposed to hazardous physical conditions (i.e., hazmat, confined spaces, heights, mechanical parts, electrical currents, vibration, etc.), poor atmospheric conditions (i.e., fumes, odors, dusts, gases, and poor ventilation), inadequate lighting, and

intense noise. In addition, the work will require seasonal exposure to extreme (both hot and cold) weather conditions, including snow and ice.

The incumbent may be expected to walk on rough, uneven terrain, as well as wet and slippery surfaces. The work requires

the ability to distinguish colors and to hear audible alarms. The physical ability to ascend and descend ladders to access work areas and enter into and exit from confined spaces. The work often involves the ability to perform routine moderate lifting and carrying up to 30 lbs. an
