                                          3-Knife Operator (2nd Shift 3pm – 11pm)

                                         Chelsea, MI

                                   Bindery

STATEMENT OF PURPOSE: 

The major purpose of the 3-knife operator is to safely set up, change over and trim the three sides on all books. The 3-knife Operator works closely with the Binder Operator.

Primary Duties and Responsibilities (*Essential Functions):

These are functions a qualified incumbent or applicant must be able to perform with or without reasonable accommodation.

  •  Operate 3 knife in a safe manner, following lifting procedures and encouraging others to do the same.
  • Read, understand and follow instructions as specified on the job ticket.
  • Set-up and change over machines properly for bulk trim size and specified margins.
  • Perform trimming books in multiples.
  • Run jobs as scheduled by Bindery Supervisor in a safe manner.
  • Coordinate and monitor the responsibilities of the 3-knife crew to obtain specified packaging instructions and information.
  • The 3-knife operator must thoroughly understand the quality characteristics of a customer and or Bindery ready book with responsibility for ensuring all books are coming off the machine as finished product and meet or exceed our customers and or bindery quality expectations.
  • Check each job for accuracy of specifications and verify the quality meets our expectations.
  • Read, understand and follow the knife change procedure making safety the highest priority.
  • Fill-out paperwork correctly and consistently, communicating all needed information to the next operation.
  • Consistently produce quantities consistent with or exceeding standards.
  • Clean machine and area; perform scheduled maintenance and repairs when needed.
  • Adhere to time “guidelines” for change-over’s, set-ups and preventative maintenance.
  • Keep work area clean and free of hazards.
  • Assist in training of new operators and employees.
  • Cross train or assist in other areas, or on other machines both within and outside the Department, when requested

JOB REQUIREMENTS:

Essential:

  •  A minimum of a high school diploma or GED required.
  • Basic verbal and written communication skills.
  • Must possess ability to work at a rapid pace.
  • Ability to perform work safely.
  • Reliable; Dependable transportation.
  • Required to work mandatory overtime as needed.

 PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS & ENVIROMENTAL CONDITIONS:

  • Ability to keep up with a high-speed delivery output in a standing position for a full shift.
  • Ability to step up, reach overhead, and manually feed blanks into machine.
  • Ability to stand for long periods of time.
  • Requires regularly standing, walking, carrying, climbing, and reaching.
  • Ability to lift mail sacks, cartons and skids up to a maximum of 70 lbs. continuously.
  • Manual dexterity required to grasp, move, stack, and manipulate parts of or finished magazines, exposure to arm and wrist fatigue.
  • Ability to stand for long periods of time.
  • Exposure to noise; must wear hearing protection and safety shoes.
