The Safety Manager directs the transportation safety management and compliance processes and provides overall support and guidance company-wide. This position is a hands-on, highly collaborative, dynamic role that coordinates with and influences leadership throughout each location by crafting strategies focused on safety and compliance within the Operations Department and in optimizing safety implementation, management and compliance in the transportation industry. The incumbent introduces and oversees systems and activities to maintain oversight of regulatory compliance status; provides and facilitates training and professional development for management and drivers; coordinates and manages risk management processes; conducts audits and inspections of the safety management processes; and monitors metrics while indexing reflecting performance.


This position is 100% in person at our Plymouth, Michigan office.


Responsibilities:


  • Stay up to date with federal, state, and local transportation regulations, ensuring that fleet operations are fully compliant at all times.
  • Define, develop, and implement programs to ensure compliance and proper engagement with rules and regulations of the DOT, FMSCA, OSHA, & Local agencies.
  • Use various analytical approaches to improve overall safety performance.
  • Identify and recommend improvements to reduce costs, increase productivity and efficiency, and improve overall safety culture.
  • Continuously monitor safety performance, identify areas for improvement, and implement best practices to drive continuous safety enhancement across the fleet.
  • Develop and implement internal audit process.
  • Design, implement, and administer fleet safety policies, procedures, and guidelines to create a proactive safety culture and promote a safe working environment.
  • Manage and investigate all accident/crashes, establishing root cause, preventability and corrective action plans while acting as liaison with outside service providers and insurance companies.
  • Maintain all vehicle accident records as well as the processing of claims with our insurance provider.
  • Organize and conduct safety meetings for drivers and other personnel.
  • Provide continuing education of staff and drivers in safety management practices, protocols and procedures.
  • Lead safety portion of new hire onboarding program and follow up with new hires during their first 90 days to ensure understanding and adherence to all safety policies and processes.
  • Complete special projects and other duties as assigned.



    Requirements:

    • 10+ years of fleet safety or transportation management experience required.
    • In-depth and demonstrable knowledge of federal and state transportation regulations and safety standards (e.g., DOT, FMCSA, etc.).
    • Knowledge of FMCSR s Regulations and CSA Standards.
    • Proficient using Microsoft products specifically Excel and PowerPoint.
    • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills to effectively train and collaborate with drivers and employees at all levels.
    • Ability to work in cross functional teams.
    • Demonstrated history of exceptional performance, innovation, and leadership.
    • Experience in implementation of safety programs and processes, including accident prevention, driver training, and regulatory protocols.
    • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with the ability to interpret safety data and develop effective strategies.
    • Familiarity with telematics and fleet management software is a plus.
    • High school diploma or equivalent required; BS Degree in safety, logistics, transportation management or related field preferred.
    • Valid driver's license required; Class A CDL preferred.
    • Ability to travel as required.
