GENERAL SUMMARY:Under the general direction of the physician, applies, repairs, and removes casts. Assume responsibilities of the orthopedic cast room which includes assisting physicians and staff with application and removal of casts. Traction device set up and adjustment performed per instructions of orthopedic physician.PRINCIPALS DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:1. Acts as a resource in application and removal of all patient castings performed.2. Responsible for application of some specialty casts ordered by the physician.3. Assists physicians in closed reduction procedures by ensuring bones are properly aligned for casting, traction, and splints. Ensures x-rays are obtained for pre and post casting, splinting, and traction as ordered by physicians.4. May participate with physician in conducting daily rounds for inpatient examinations. Responsible for set up and adjustment of traction devices and overhead trapeze. Evaluates and monitors ortho traction status.5. Performs casting procedures using plaster, fiberglass, moveable hinges, or other materials. Follows written procedures for cast application.6. Educates patients with regards to cast care, signs and symptoms of complications resulting from circulatory and neurological compromise. Documents teaching in Patient Medical Record.7. Stays current on new casting procedures and equipment. May orient new personnel to the orthopedic cast room and procedures. Provides in-service training for nursing, residents, and other personnel on traction methods and casting techniques.8. Responsible to requests from various departments/units to deliver ortho equipment (i.e., splint, knee apparatus, exercise equipment, hinge demobilizes, etc.) and demonstrates proper usage.9. Completes patient documentation to initiate professional fee billing.10. Uses cast saw to trim cast after hardening. Cleans and maintains tools and work area as required. Removes sutures, staples and pins as ordered by physicians. Applies clean or sterile dressing to wounds or incisions.11. Orders all supplies12. Performs other related duties as assigned.EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE REQUIRED:High School Diploma or G.E.D. equivalent.At least six months previous clinical experience as a Medical Assistant, Orthopedic Technician.Casting and splinting experience preferred.CERTIFICATIONS/LICENSURES REQUIRED:Current Heart Saver Certification.
